The Challenge for Guys on Valentine's

This post is dedicated to all the guys out there! Many men think that making women happy for Valentine's Day is a challenge but in all reality it's not. Here are a few tips to help you through this holiday dedicated to love.

First and foremost, realize each woman in the world is unique and different. If you love her then you know her better than most... right? Well, here is a thought, do something unique for her! If she loves purple don't get her red roses, get purple. Your sweetheart will notice that you remembered her favorite color and be even more excited about her gift. Or if you can figure out what was in her wedding bouquet maybe get her an arrangement of those flowers (BROWNIE POINTS)!

Second if your girl is health conscience don't go for the heart shaped box of candy. Not only did you throw her diet off, but you have also forgotten she is trying to be good! Women love it when you remember things. Opt instead for maybe a box of chocolate covered strawberries to share. The chocolate level isn't too bad and it's a fruit. We will have some chocolate covered strawberries from Marble Slab! Or forget the chocolate all together and figure out her favorite snack. Some girls love salty more than sweet.

Also, escape the hustle and bustle of dinning out on Valentine's Day. It's a mad house in most restaurants and that doesn't scream romance. How about looking up some yummy recipes online and making her something at home (send the kids to grandma's house!) and open a bottle of wine. Or order take out and pretend it's homemade, just hide the evidence (wink)! She will not only appreciate the night off from cooking dinner but also will be impressed with your new skills with the skillet. Just be careful because she may expect you to start cooking more often!

This Week's EXTREMEly Fun Projects . . .

Normally, after Christmas we have a chance to catch our breath before Valentine's Day and Wedding Season. However, the past week or so we've had projects up to our eyeballs (but in an EXTREMELY great way)!
For those who haven't read or heard the news volunteers all over Knoxville are joining together to help build a home for a local family with the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. We are so blessed and honored to join together with our friends at Gift and Gourmet to help decorate the VIP tent. Also, we are thankful to be asked to help decorate the finished product (aka the house) with a few flowers as well. What an exciting time to be a part of the Knoxville community!
We can't reveal too much, but here are a few photos of the VIP tent, muddy leftovers from all of our lovely East Tennessee weather and Lisa and her favorite accessory!

It's The Holiday Season!

The Lisa Foster team is busy, busy out decorating houses for Christmas! Sunday, November 13th we kicked things off right with an almost all-night-er at the Chop House. We had various teams around the restaurant who hung the garland, lights and ribbons. Then we fluffed and fluffed the bows and trees and wreaths. After six hours we had accomplished the job... Santa's elves have nothing on us!

Our Next goal for both Monday and Tuesday was to tackle our first house! Lucky we had a game plan to get things done as efficiently as possible. It's so fun to get to transform an already beautiful house into a festive Christmas space! Below are just a few of the photos we took after we finished. The Lisa Foster Floral Design team is looking forward to the rest of the houses for this season. Stay tuned because we will surely have more photos.

The MOST Wonderful Time of the Year!

There is a lot going on around the shop lately! We have been decorating for Christmas, shopping for our Salvation Army Elderly Christmas Stockings, getting a new computer system and of course our weddings!
Its great to be busy and we want to share with you some of the commotion!

First of all Christmas in the shop has arrived (don't worry we haven't forgotten about Thanksgiving) the fall section has just been minimized! We realize it's early but in the world of retail and floral design we have to be ahead of the game. One side of our shop is Winter Wonderland and the other is Cozy Christmas! We have GREAT gift ideas and are offering FREE wrapping on all gifts over $10.00! You just can't beat it, get your shopping and wrapping done at once! Below are a few photos of the shop but please come by and see us, we love to have visitors.

Our next exciting Christmas activity is the Salvation Army's stocking drive for elderly underprivileged citizens of Knoxville. The Lisa Foster Floral Design Team has a goal of collecting enough necessities to stuff 50 stockings! We have a small stock pile of soaps and things but we are asking our customers to help us with a few odds and ends. The full list of items needed are below.

We had the privilege of working with some wonderful ladies this Monday, September 26 for a photo shoot at Club LeConte for their new website adventure. The concept of the website will be to see different looks you can achieve at the club with different linens, flowers, place settings...etc.
We feel the project went exceedingly well and feel it will benefit everyone envolved. Mostly, it will help brides and others wishing to use the club for any special event. To give credit where credit is due we have to say a BIG THANKS to The White Table and their hard working Dorinda Mullins, Expressive Moments with Kristy Hamilton and Amy Daniels who are wonderful ladies and excellent photographers! Kissing Ball Trend

Something that we have seen lately is an increasing numbers of brides choosing to have their flower girls carry a kissing ball instead of throwing petals. Wether its the regulations of the churches or they feel their flower girls are too young to understand the duty of sprinkling the aisle with petals the kissing ball is a great alternative.

What is a kissing ball? It’s a small foam ball covered with flowers and hung by ribbon. Brides have many options in choosing various flowers for their kissing balls. Many choose carnations because when bunched together carnations transform into a beautiful fluffy and elegant looking decoration. Most people are blown away by how different they look bunched together. Others choose to do a kissing ball in roses, mums or even daisies. Kissing balls are also used to decorate wedding aisles, tables at receptions and walk ways.

Destination Florida - Operation Wedding

If you keep up with us on Facebook then you know that three of the Lisa Foster Floral Design Team headed to Amelia Island, Florida to work a destination wedding for our former employee and friend Emily Williams. Lisa, Jennifer and Kim packed up early Thursday, August 25 to drive nine hours.
If anyone hasn't stopped at the Florida Welcome Station to get the free OJ and/or Grapefruit juice, word to the wise try the grapefruit before the orange juice. It was Lisa's first time ever visiting the Welcome Center and she loved it!
Once we arrived at the condo we had the welcome wagon waiting for us. The Georgia State Floral Distributors' Daryl met us and had everything ready for us to dive right into. The colors of the flowers were absolutely phenomenal! They really went to great lengths to ensure we were happy with the flowers and that we had enough. Right away we started cutting, pulling, cleaning and separating the flowers. Literally we hit the ground running! After getting the rehearsal dinner flowers finished (at 2:00am) we hit the hay so we could start again in the morning.
Friday, we worked all day getting everything done. Lisa tackled the bouquets for Emily and the bridesmaids. Jennifer had the reception centerpieces under control and Kim handled the boutonnieres and corsages. After delivering the rehearsal dinner flowers we had a chance to drive and see the island a little bit on our way back to finish the flowers. We had to finish all of the flowers before we went to bed Friday night since we had to deliver everything by 8:00am Saturday morning.
Saturday morning, we delivered the girls bouquets and other people flowers then ran to make sure the reception at Walker's Landing had the finishing touches.
The wedding ceremony was beautiful and the three Lisa Foster Floral Girls were teary eyed. It was perfect, Emily made a stunning bride and Andrew was a very handsome groom! You could just tell how happy the two of them are and will be. Below are a few photos of our weekend excursion. We can't wait to see the professional photos from Andrea Taylor Studio.

Gift Idea - Spa Wrap

While at Market in Atlanta last month we ordered some very cute and practical spa wraps. They are made from the same waffle material as our spa robes and come in a wide variety of colors! All the shop girls fell in love with them and a few weeks ago we received our order! The great thing is that they would make a great gift for multiple occasions, or for yourself. If you have started your Christmas shopping which there is only 128 days left these are awesome stocking stuffers for college students and teens! We also have other accessories to go with the robes and wraps.

Pennant Banner - How To...

We have recently given our window a face lift! This is a simple craft that would be great for a birthday banner or summer cookout. You can use extra fabric, old clothing or scrapbook paper.

Materials:
Fabric or Paper of choice
Hot Glue Gun
Twine or rope of some kind
Scissors

STEP ONE: Print and cut out your patterns

STEP TWO: Lay your twine in the proper spot.

STEP THREE: Either hot glue or pin to sew the top of your pennant.

Space the pennants as far apart as you wish!

The finished product is cute, simple and everyone will want to know how you made such an eye catching craft! Feel free to print our pattern and try this for yourself! Let us know if you try it and how you like the finished product.

How We Made It!

Recently residents of Knoxville have experienced the largest power outage ever in this area. Some residents are still without power almost a full week later. It's one thing to lose power at home but how do businesses deal with the loss of power? Lisa Foster and the Team decided at lunchtime on Wednesday, June 22 to pack up the wedding flowers and head to Lisa's house in order preserve the flowers in a cool environment. Lucky thing Lisa had worked from her house so she had the tools we needed in just such an emergency! We made the best of the power outage and made homemade soup and watch day-time tv while working on the weddings. We had a great time and it definitely was team bonding through trial! Lisa even made the evening news! Check out the video of her and other businesses forced to close due to the weather.

Florists' Review Magazine - Best Bouquets - Lisa Foster Floral Design

If you are one of our avid Facebook fans then you may or may not have noticed that we here at Lisa Foster Floral Design were one of theFlorists' Review's Picture-Perfect Wedding Winners. The categories for the contest were Best Wedding, Best Bouquets, Best Ceremony Site, Best Reception Decorations and Best Cake Decorations. We won the Best Bouquets out of all of the weddings entered across the United States and Canada! Contestants could enter no more than three weddings. The three we entered was, Kelly Huddleston (our winner!!), Ashley Farrington and Melissa Dandurand. Each of these three brides we felt had beautiful and unique bouquets. Not to mention Ashley Farrington being our Biltmore Bride we thought that stood a fair chance of winning the Best Ceremony Site. After waiting a few months to hear the results of the contest we finally received the call that we had won Best Bouquets! What an honor for a florist to receive! Also, we had what some would call "honorable mention" in the showcase section showing off our two other brides. Lisa did a dance in the street that day! What Goes Around....Comes Back Around!

Like bell-bottom jeans, rompers, poof hair styles and leggings, Lisa Foster Floral Design is bringing back the terrarium! What is a terrarium? Well, it is a great gift, easy to maintain and adds a touch of green to any indoor space. Really what a terrarium is, is a self contained mini-ecosystem that waters itself. We suggest them as "men gifts" for those customers who need to send a man something but doesn't want to send flowers.

Terrariums were very popular in Victorian homes in England (mid 1800's). At that time they were called Wardian Cases after the man who discovered them. Nathaniel Ward was in the process of observing insect chrysalis transform in a glass bottle when a sprig of grass started to grow. He then realized that the glass bottles create the perfect environment for plant life. Terrariums were also popular in the 1970's but not as popular as they were in the Victorian era.

We just love them and so do those customers who've purchased them. It's such a great idea! Water it once and that is all you have to do! After the one time the plant creates water on it's own. Talk about a plant you can't kill! So if you or someone you know loves plants but has a yellow thumb instead of a green one suggest they get a terrarium!

Shamrock Plants

Spring is upon us and St. Patrick's Day is coming up shortly. If you need a little touch of green to keep from getting pinched may we suggested getting a Shamrock Plant! They have delicate flowers and leaves and bright and cheery green and live for a long time. There is a blog out there called The Gardener's Rake while reading their tips about growing shamrocks I've learned some valuable information.

First, Shamrocks are in the bulb family which means when they look like they are on the edge of death it's really not the end, just a fast nap for a few weeks before they regenerate themselves. Unlike Tulips or Daffodils which bloom once per year, Shamrocks after a pruning and a nap in a low light area come back. Just remember to pick off the yellowed leaves and stems, place in a dark area with NO WATER for a few weeks. This allows the plant to rest before coming back.

Second, once per year refresh the soil. Take your Shamrocks out of their pots to inspect the roots and soil condition. It's best to replace the soil with fresh. Gently loosen the roots but be mindful not to break any of them. This allows for the roots to get air, which will help them grow. Also check for any mold or other questionable conditions for the soil or roots. Make sure you clean your pot or start with another fresh pot before replacing the soil.

The last little bit of advice is to water your plant from the bottom. Shamrocks like to slurp water from the bottom. Not sure what we mean by watering from the bottom... see the photo below!

March's Flower Of The Month - Daffodil

Hello Everyone!

As I'm sure you've seen along the side of the road and popping up around town the sunny-yellow faced Daffodils are here! Aren't they beautiful? It is surely a sign that Spring is near. We just love, love, love them here at Lisa Foster Floral Design. Daffodils, like other bulb flowers are planted in the Fall and bloom in the Spring. These flowers need lots of sun, some shade and good soil drainage. They are very easy to maintain and come back year after year. Planting bulbs each fall is a great gardening activity for families with children. Check out The Daffodil Planting Guide on the Gardening with Kids website. They have great tips on when exactly to plant the bulbs for your region.

Valentine's Re-Cap

Tuesday, February 15.... and we are all in a Valencoma.

Valentine's Day for all of us here at Lisa Foster Floral Design went so well! We had media coverage from Channel 6, Channel 8 and WNOX 100.3 throughout the day. The Drive-Thru Tent was a success again this year. We sold out of flowers around lunchtime but thankfully had the wholesale house deliver a fresh batch for the afternoon and evening. Roses were definitely our number one seller but there were a lot of guys wanting to give "something different" to their sweethearts. Over all we enjoyed the day and everyone who stopped in got exactly what they wanted! Knoxville sweeties were spoiled yesterday and we hope that they loved the flowers!

Dogwood Arts Festival - Tablescape Blue Ribbon

Everyone!

We are so excited to announce that we have won the Dogwood Arts Festival Best Fresh Flower Tablescape for 2011! It was a team effort and we all had a great time coming up with ideas on how to interpret our painting of choice "Spring Cascades". That painting really stuck out as an easy way to incorporate fresh flowers in a design. We loved the moss covered rocks and the idea of using genestra as the water in the waterfall. Luckily, we had some birch candles laying around for us to use to wrap containers and vases which really helped give a wooden look. Genentra and Larkspur really helped tie in the light pops of color we needed in our tall up-n-out arrangement.

February Flower of the Month - The Red Rose

So maybe it is "cliche" to have the red rose as our February Flower of the Month but before you disregard this post hear us out. I thought it would be interesting to learn a little history about why the red rose is important in history. The rose is a perennial plant with over 100 species. Flowers are large and showy, in a variety of colors.

Lets just say the red rose has been symbolic for a very, very long time in various countries around the world. There was even a series of civil wars called Wars of the Roses dealing with two branches of noble power who wanted the English throne for themselves, the houses of Lancashire and York. The house of Lancashire represented by the red rose and the house of York represented by the white rose.

These wars were fought off and on throughout the years of 1455 and 1485, with the final "battle" being won by Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond and the house of Lancashire (not the Henry Tudor you are thinking about) whose linage ruled England and Wales for over one-hundred years. Henry Tudor VII married Elizabeth of York uniting the two families as one. So really all the fighting was for nothing since in the end they all came together in a "Happily Ever After" sort of way.

Beyond the history with the Royals of England the red rose (and roses in general) have been around for thousands of years. Civilizations from China to Rome, England and many others have enjoyed and valued roses since they were first cultivated. They are a classic symbol of love and romance but have also been symbols in wars and politics. The Lisa Foster Floral Design Team loves red roses, well to be honest, we love roses of all colors. It's hard to just love one!

Roses in gardens are fairly easy to maintain and roses are repeat bloomers with long blooming seasons. They smell good and come in a variety of colors. You can learn a lot from the University of Illinois "Our Rose Garden" website. There they tell you how to grow and maintain your roses.

Now you are a little more educated on the history of the red rose and maybe will get to use this information during a trivia game! Or maybe your sweetheart will be impressed with your random flower knowledge. There are probably endless amounts of history regarding the symbolism of the rose but we wanted to just touch on one.

As we prepare for Valentine's Day we want to remind everyone that there is a 10% discount for all Valentine's orders placed before February 11th.

Preparing for Valentine's Day

Hello Everyone!

In preparation for Valentine's Day we at Lisa Foster Floral Design thought we should share a brief overview of who St. Valentine or "Valentinus" was or who he was according to legend. While doing a little homework on the subject, we discovered that the Catholic Church recognizes no less than three different saints named Valentine. All "St. Valentine's" were martyred for one reason or another.

The probable St. Valentine that we honor with heart-shaped chocolate boxes and the iconic red rose lived in the third century Rome (or so legend says). Emperor Claudius II made his mind up that single men made better soldiers. He thought they had less distractions without children and wives to think about. So with this thought he outlawed marriage for young-men. Despite the laws Valentine found this law ridiculous and kept marrying the young men and women of Rome. Supposedly, when Emperor Claudius II found out about this he ordered Valentine killed. Knowing how Rome was he probably was a snack for the lions at the Colosseum...just a guess.

There are many more legends that suggest that Valentine sent the first "Valentine" from prison to a young girl he fell in love with and signed it "From, Your Valentine". Which unless you live under a rock you know is a phrase still in existence today.

Wherever the legend originated from or whomever St. Valentine was truly we are happy that he lived at some point and we are able to celebrate love a little extra on February 14th. We will be celebrating with the Second Annual Drive-Thru Valentine's Tent!

This month we are highlighting the Tulip!

Everyone knows what a tulip looks like but did you know that there are over 3,000 different types of tulips? Tulips are the most popular of all the bulbed plants. Tulips where first discovered in the late sixteenth century (1500's) in the Netherlands. Now tulips are grown all over the world. Most tulips are cultivated in Holland both dried bulbs and fresh cut flowers. Historically, Europe considered tulips as the symbol of the Ottoman Empire. Tulips symbolize imagination, dreaminess, perfect lover and a declaration of love. Also, if you run out of onions substitute a tulip bulb!

Since Christmas and The New Year are just around the corner we wanted to post our Holiday hours of operation. Also, we thought for you to get to know us a little better we would share our favorite Christmas traditions either past or current.

Today we received our copy of At Home Tennessee Magazine and guess what?!? One of our brides made page 65. Sarah Petty and Andrew Duncan wed on January 30, 2010 at the Fox Den Country Club. The main color was red with touches of black. Photography was done by Brandt Photography, Catering was provided by Fox Den Country Club and Sarah's dress came from White Lace and Promises. One of the best personal touches of the wedding was all of the guests where to throw paper airplanes at Sara and Andrew as they left the Country Club.

December Flower of the Month : Amaryllis

Greetings Everyone!

Lisa and the Team are out and about today working hard on the last day of decorating houses. Back here in the shop we've got a lot going on preparing for two weddings this weekend. Especially, blogging about our flower of the month! This December we are highlighting the Amaryllis.

Quick Facts (from Amaryllis Bulb Company)

* planting period: October - Late April

* Flowering period: Late December - Late June

* Flowering time is 7 - 10 weeks

* Larger bulbs produce more flowers

* Always store un-planted bulbs in a cool place between 40 - 50 deg. F.

Many people enjoy growing amaryllis at home because they are easy to grow and beautiful to look at. The word Amaryllis comes from the Greek word for "sparkling" which makes sense since they help brighten up any room during the cold winter months. They can be found in red, pink, yellow and a few combination of these colors. We love them here at LFFD! They are so unique looking and lovely with their many different colors.

Hello Everyone,

Well, we have posted recently regarding Christmas bows so I thought what a great opportunity to talk about them! I'm sure you have spent time and money getting the ribbon you want. Then there is the tying them together, fluffing them and making sure they look perfect on your tree or wreath. Unless you call us and we tie, fluff and make things perfect for you! 865.951.0660.
The big question is... How exactly do you go about keeping them just as nice for the following year?

We have the answer!

First tip for bows is to invest in new ribbons every year or buy a higher quality wire ribbon to begin with. If you plan to reuse them it is worth the investment.

Second, I'm sure after Christmas morning your living room is covered with tissue and paper... well here is your chance to reuse some of that paper and feel a little more "green". Before packing your bows away take some of your used tissue and stuff in between each ribbon loop.

Finally, if your house allows, find a spot in a crawl space or attic to hang your bows. This will ensure the best preservation for your Christmas bows and save you from having to fluff or remake them for the following year.

That is it! Sounds pretty simple, right?

November Flower of the Month - Narcissus Paperwhite

This month we at Lisa Foster Floral Design have chosen to highlight a winter blooming flower called Narcissus Paperwhite. Often grown indoors this small but mighty fragrant flower brings a little brightness during the winter months. Most commonly found in white it can also be found in yellow. At Paperwhite's mature height it stands between 30-45 cm and blooms in bunches. Paperwhites are in the same genus as Daffodils... so think of the Paperwhite as the Daffodils twice removed cousin. After planting the bulbs, flowers should appear between 3 - 4 weeks. FUN FACT: Narcissus were named after the legendary Greek youth Narcissus who was very handsome! No surprise since these are such lovely little flowers.

How to Grow Paperwhites Indoors (From The Gardeners Network):

Fill a shallow bowl, pot, or container part way with stones, gravel or soil. Set Paperwhite bulbs onto the stones, pushing them down just far enough so the bulbs are supported in an upright position. Put several of them together. Don't worry about crowding.

Add water just to the bottom of the bulb. If the water covers too much of the bulb, they can rot. Put them in a cool, dark place for one to two weeks. When the roots begin to take hold, and the plant has sprung from the bulb, take the pot out into a brightly lit room. Watch closely and the blooms should start to appear a few weeks after that!

Love is in the air...

Being a full service florist, specializing in weddings, love is always in the air around our shop. But today we have a lot of love to talk about. We love Julie Roberts, which you have heard us talk about several times. If you don't know Julie, visit her website at www.julierobertsphoto.com and check her out. Her work is absolutely breathtaking and we just can't get enough of Julie Roberts and her fabulous photography. We also love the sweet couple she recently photographed on September 19th, 2010, Andy and Kelly (Kohlbusch) Huddleston. They are such sweet people, with the sweetest wedding party (many were our previous brides: Staci Beshears Kohlbusch, Jenna Wasielewski Waters, Charlotte Cruze Foster and Janie Dance Wells.) Did we mention the flowers? The flowers for this wedding were the epitome of the fall season and we loved every second of the designing and work that went into creating these arrangements for their wedding. Today, we just wanted to share some pictures from one of our favorite photographers, Julie Roberts, one of our favorite couples, and one of our favorite flower combinations. We just love them all. If you haven't heard, One Enchanted Evening, the fabulous wedding planners that used to be located in the back of our shop have spread their wings and flown to a bigger place. They are now the proud owners of Enchanted Details Event Boutique, located at 8078 Kingston Pike, Suite 119 in Downtown West. Biltmore Wedding

The wedding we have all been anticipating for some time has now come and gone, and it went off without a hitch. The sweet and stunning Ashley Hazelwood wed on June 12th, 2010 at the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina.

Planning and preparation for the wedding began months ahead of time. Lisa attended many meetings with Ashley, her mother, Suzie and the wedding planners to have all the details planned out to assist in giving Ashley the wedding of her dreams. Lisa rented two large trucks, a 24-foot refrigerated truck and a 15-foot box truck, in order to transport the flowers safely to the Biltmore Estate. The adventure began early Thursday morning, Lisa and her crew of eight loaded up in several cars and the two large trucks and were on their way.

When they arrived early Thursday afternoon, the team hit the ground running, and kept on running until Sunday evening. The first event on the agenda was the bridesmaid's luncheon, which was held in a 125 year old champagne cellar at the Biltmore Estate. Approximately 300 mercury glass votives and candles were dispersed around the room to lighten the cellar and 20 gallon bags of rose petals were tossed around the room. The arrangements on the tables were made up of all white flowers including: hydrangeas, roses, stock and lisianthus. Even the beautiful, hanging chandeliers were adorned with smilac greenery and hanging amaranthus to complete the cellar.

After the bridesmaid's luncheon was completed, it was on to the next task: the rehearsal dinner. The dinner was held at the Grand Bohemian Hotel in Asheville and hosted by the lovely Farrington's, the mother and father of the groom, Jeffrey.

In just a blink of an eye, the big day had arrived. There was lots to be done on Saturday to have everything absolutely perfect for the wedding, which was held Saturday evening at 7 pm. The ceremony was held on the front lawn of the Biltmore Estate, which very few people have had the privilege of. White chairs were set up facing the gorgeous estate, with an orchestra on the side. Instead of creating large arrangements, which would look small amongst the extravagant lawn, Lisa with her amazing talent, sketched and commissioned a gate and a wrought iron artist constructed it based upon Lisa's vision. It was more beautiful than any of us could have ever imagined.

Following the ceremony, the reception was held in a large, exquisite, white tent. There were fifty tables placed under the tent for all the guests to enjoy a gourmet dinner. Each guest received their own orchid entwined with birch branch that was placed on their napkin. Lisa and the crew designed a variety of arrangements for the tables, both small and large. The arrangements were mixed with roses, hydrangeas, lisianthus, bells of Ireland, and extravagant, green, cymbidium orchids, which were flown in from Holland, just for the wedding.

The pictures are just a small glimpse of the celebration of the marriage of Ashley Hazelwood and Jeffrey Farrington. The entire weekend was a fascinating success, from the bridesmaid's luncheon to the reception. Lisa and the team had a blast and are grateful for the privilege to provide the floral arrangements for the Hazelwood wedding.

We are adding one more entry to our Meet the Team series because we've recently added a new member to our staff at Lisa Foster Floral Design. We are so happy to announce, Emily Williams, a Senior at the University of Tennessee as the newest addition to our team! Emily is originally from Amelia Island, FL, but has attended UT all 4 years of college and has made numerous friends (and a long-lasting romantic relationship!) with Knoxville natives along the way by her sweet personality and stunning smile. Emily will receive her Bachelor's degree in Retail and Consumer Science come December; she is so excited about completing her education and joining our team. With her positive demeanor and experience in retail, we are just as excited about her becoming one of our staff.

Emily is already learning so much about the floral industry and will serve as Lisa's Executive Assistant, helping brides schedule consultations, taking everyday floral orders, and helping you with whatever you need. Emily will actually be taking over the blog soon, so the posts will now come from her creative mind. She will keep you informed of all the latest happenings, events and sales going on here at Lisa Foster. With a great and quiet sense of humor and that sweet smile, Emily is fitting right in here at Lisa Foster Floral Design. A Photo Shoot & A Faux Wedding...

What is going on with that title?? That is what you're thinking, I know. Well, I am here to fill you in. Recently, our friend and photographer extraordinaire, Julie Roberts of Julie Roberts Photography had a very interesting idea that she asked us to participate in. Julie offered a workshop to aspiring photographers, showing them the tips and tricks over the years that have made her one of the best. I've taken and edited some of her thoughts from the day; she can explain to you best the concept.

"Of course, I was nervous. This was my first real workshop. Not just a class but a workshop complete with a group photo shoot that involved A LOT of people. It happened two weeks ago now and I can look back with relief and say that I'm really happy with how it went and I definitely want to do more of these things in the future.
I had an awesome group of six students who were engaging, inspired, and ready to learn. Our day began at 8am at my home. There were make-up and hair stylists getting the models ready in one room. And in another room was the actual "class" part of the day. We had lunch and then we were off to the group photo shoot.
The planning of this photo shoot involved a lot of people. Mostly with the help of John Mark Woodard - who is beginning his own event planning business - we were able to come up with a concept for a pretend wedding. The idea was that I wanted the students to have something as close to a real wedding as possible - full of all the gorgeous details you would encounter as well as gorgeous people. Not only did I want it to be realistic but I wanted it to be inspired, creative, and a little non-traditional. I think we did it! Our concept was to do a 20's inspired garden tea party. "20's inspired" because not everything was completely 20's accurate ... but I love the way it all turned out."

Flower of the Month: Spotlight on DELPHINIUM

With the holiday's, a new year, and some large events we were a part of over the last few months, our studio has been buzzing. We took a few months off from our Flower of the Month posts... But spring has sprung and it's now time to start our flower spotlight again! This month, we're talking about Delphinium, one of the few true blue flowers that nature offers.

There are amazingly about 250 species of Delphinium (pronounced del-FIN-ee-um), but today, we'll focus on the three main hybrid groups grown as cut flowers. Those groups are the ones we primarily receive in our studio that we sell and arrange for you. Delphinium are a beautiful flower, tall and sturdy and available in a range of blues from light to dark. They are one of the rarities in nature - a blue that God created and our florists don't have to mess with a bit to try and make a different hue! One group of hybrid delphinium do come in a variety of colors (white, cream, mauve, lavender and purple) but for the most part, the delphinium we work with and most people favor are the true blue stems.

Delphinium are not only known for their color, but for their multiple blooms and nice height. They add variation and lots of interest to an otherwise ordinary arrangement. Their stem of sometimes as tall as 5 feet can be used in a very large arrangement, or cut down to compliment and still add height to a shorter design. Check out some of the ways our designers have worked with delphinium.

As far as the care for delphinium goes, they will usually be ready for you to enjoy by the time you get them from Lisa Foster Floral Design, or any floral shop, but you can help them last longer by re-cutting the stems daily and washing the container every other day.

The new year is getting well under way, and our blog has been up for about 7 months now (yay!), so it is finally time to finish meeting the team at Lisa Foster Floral Design. Today, you'll be meeting... me. I'm the blogger here at Lisa's and the writer behind all the "Lisa & the Team" posts. I will say it has been much easier to write about all of our great events and the other members of my team than about myself, but here goes.

I am Lauren Duggin, the Marketing Director at Lisa Foster Floral Design. I graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor's in Communication, and after a fun and tiring run as a news anchor, I transitioned to more of a Public Relations/Marketing arena. I love writing and coming up with creative, elegant, and fun ways to say something. I hope that is the way our blog at Lisa's comes across. We are a professional bunch here who has a lot of fun doing we do - serving you and providing the freshest, most customized floral designs in Knoxville.

As far as my role here goes, I am all things graphic, marketing, writing, and advertising. I even get my hands dirty from time to time with our super talented designers, helping do the simple and necessary tasks needed to make your wedding bouquets and daily deliveries be the best they can be.

To put it simply, Lisa came along at just the right time in my life and I hope I came along at just the right time in hers. I am grateful for this pretty amazing floral design studio she has created from the ground up.

Bridal Show

With prom season approaching and brides coming to visit us daily who've received rings in the new year, we've been busy migrating from one venue to the next, showcasing our floral designs and what we can create for you.

On Sunday, some of our team traveled over to the Expo Center in Knoxville to participate in the annual - and very large - bridal show that Fox 43 hosts. Lisa provided an array of unique and beautiful bouquets for the fashion show put on by A Joyous Occasion and set up a booth for brides too see our designs and our popular Crystal Trees that we rent.

We met so many great brides who we hope we'll be working with for their special day. We were also happy that there was so much interest in our newest retail line full of the perfect bridal gifts (for mothers of the bride & groom, bridesmaids, and the bride). You all bought a lot... and we are not complaining! :)

An Evening In Orange

If you've tried to call us and haven't gotten an answer; if you've tried to book an appointment with us only to find there are few available time slots, if any; if you've stopped by the studio and it's been an absolute chaos of flowers, buckets, designers, and heady fragrances in the last week, blame it on the magnificent event we were a part of this past Saturday on January 16.

Lisa was honored when, several months ago, the Chair of the event, Christy Phillips, came and asked us to jump aboard... for An Evening in Orange. The 3rd annual auction/event raised proceeds for the region's first dedicated heart hospital at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and was definitely a night to remember. Months ago, Lisa began planning for a transformation to take place at Cherokee Country Club, where An Evening In Orange was held. Our job, along with All Occasions Party Rentals and the team at Bandit Lites, was to take every room in the club from elegant and plush to amazing and breath-taking. We like to think we achieved our goal! Take a look at some of our creations.

The evening definitely presented a challenge for our team (as we had our hand in almost every room!), but as always, they took it in stride and every leaf was in place by the time the first guests stepped through the door.

We feel so grateful to have taken part in not only an enchanted evening, but one that supported a very worthy cause. We want to send our appreciation out to everyone who participated in An Evening In Orange, including those who helped our designs shine with the most amazing linens, lights, and decor. We're looking forward to next year!

Open House

Last night, Lisa, and three other members of our team headed over to Hunter Valley Farm for our second appearance at an Open House they have begun to put on quite regularly. The beautiful, earthy pavilion over-looking the pristine (and freezing!) lake, was filled with all types of wedding vendors - Caterer's, Photo booth's, DJ's, Linen Rental companies, and of course, Floral Design! Here is a shot of the front of our table that guests saw when they arrived.

Our station was unique and showcased our custom designs as well our flexibility and willingness to create whatever a bride may choose. We had colorful, crystal-studded designs; stargazer lilies with a hot pink criss-cross wrap; a blue iris, handmade galex rose bouquet, all the way down to a traditional, elegant, all-white bouquet with our twist on the hand-tied wrap. Guest's enjoyed flipping through the many photographer books we brought, full of weddings we've helped create, as well as commenting on the amazing creation Lisa designed for the centerpiece and focal point of our table.

Another highlight of the evening was displaying our new line of merchandise Lisa just found in Atlanta! We are thrilled about all the lush, adorable bridal accessories that now fill our shelves! We have all kinds of perfect gifts for the bride, bridesmaids, and mothers of the bride and groom. Our coziest finds were some beautiful robes that can be monogrammed with whatever you choose. There are also luggage tags, totes, pictures frames, and so much more.

We had a wonderful time chatting with brides-to-be and their groom's, setting appointments, and discussing wedding plans with bride's who've already booked us for their big day.

We're looking forward to seeing you soon too! Drop by the shop to find an ideal gift for Valentine's, the bride-to-be, or (because sometimes you just have to treat you), yourself!

Next up is one of the team members that gives our studio it's beat and pulse, he brings us to life on days that are busy, hectic, chaotic, calm, overwhelming, frustrating, and he just plain makes us laugh every day. He's our beloved delivery driver Ray Covington.

Ray, better known as K. Ray in the corporate world he retired from, or Daddy to us here at the studio (he's Lisa's actual father!), is our link from the shop to your front door, bringing you the beauty our designer's create.

Ray worked for years in the transportation and trucking industry, and now he's found a new passion helping his only daughter bring her business to life by transporting she and her team's floral creations.

Meet the Team - Part 3

It's time to meet another member of our fabulous team. Today's spotlight is on our "coach", Susan Borum. Susan is our expert here at Lisa Foster Floral Design; she's been in the business for years and knows just about everything there is to know about floral design and flowers... thus the name "coach!" She coaches many of us here on arrangements, colors, what will go well together, and all sorts of other floral knowledge that makes our group the best in town!

Susan's expertise stems from her growing up in the floral business; her mother owned a florist shop that she started when Susan was a child and Susan began her work there at a mere 12 years old! Our coach has worked in every aspect of floral design, from retail to wholesale, even co-owning a wholesale silk design business. With that experience she has become not only a designer of fresh flowers and arrangements here in our studio, but she is our exclusive silk designer, making a variety of permanent arrangements that are gorgeous and long-lasting for your home or business.

Not surprisingly, Susan's favorite design she's done has been both of her daughter's weddings. It was, of course, a memorable experience for her to help create the beauty in their special days.

Susan says she feels blessed to be able to have fun and really love her job... We feel the same way with her as part of the design team at Lisa Foster. I can guarantee you'll love her too once you see one of her designs, as the giver or receiver.

Flower of the Month: Spotlight on PEONY

It's that time again - our Flower of the Month is here! This October we've chosen to highlight the Peony, a fragrant, huge-headed flower.

This flower is a favorite of many with its delightful scents and large range of colors and shapes. About 2,600 varieties of peonies are available and the array of colors include pink and red, purple, apricot, salmon, white, ivory/cream, and yellow and bicolors. The forms of a peony are wide-ranging too, but here in the U.S., double-flowered varieties are the most common.

Peonies are best to buy when they're in a "puffy" stage, meaning the buds are about to open. Be careful not to purchase any that have an overly tight bud; they may never open. Also look out for any fungus, called Botrytis (gray mold) as it will rot the entire flower head. Just remove any flowers contaminated and the bloom should continue to stay healthy.

After ensuring you've purchased the healthiest bloom, re-cut the stems, removing at least one inch, and put the flower(s) in water. Peonies like cool air and are heavy drinkers, so make sure to water them often. If you care correctly for this unique flower, it should give you 2 to 7 days of enjoyment, with a bloom opening 6 inches or more.

The peony is one of the most notable seasonal flowers, available from March to August, with its peak season in April, May and June. So why, you might ask, would we feature a flower that is so seasonal (and that's not even in season now)? Well, we think you can never plan too early! We know many brides who already have their day booked for next spring, and we think peonies are a lovely addition to any wedding bouquet. Peonies work beautifully for any occasion, not just weddings. So if you have an anniversary, birthday, or special day rolling around in the spring, consider a peony as part of your gift of flowers.

Meet the Team - Part 2

After the fun break with the Sandals post, we're back to meeting our wonderful team. Next on our lineup is Jennifer Capps. She's a fabulous, very efficient designer who's been in the business for 18 years. She and Lisa have shared a friendship since Jennifer was a child and she's been working with Lisa for 10 years, and at Lisa Foster Floral Design since its inception in 2004.

Her favorite flowers are french tulips, yet her favorite wedding was the Braden wedding, back in July of 2005, because of the beautiful containers the arrangements set in at the reception. Some of the photos below may give you a good idea of the beauty of the Braden wedding. In a few, you can even catch a glimpse of the unique glass containers Jennifer loves.

Other than being a big asset to Lisa Foster Floral Design, Jennifer spends much of her time with her husband of 10 years (whom she met in the floral industry!) and keeping up with her adorable 5-year-old son, Connor.

Jennifer is a bright light here in the studio and her designs, like Lisa's, are unique and distinctive. Now that we've got our blog up and going, we thought it was time to introduce our Team...the people that make Lisa Foster Floral Design tick, and the awesome group who helped make Lisa Foster Design win Fox43's Hot List award for 2009 Best Wedding Flowers! (Thanks for the votes everyone!)

We'll start at the top today with...LISA FOSTER, owner, operator, and CEO of Lisa Foster Floral Design. Lisa has been in the floral industry over 20 years, and she brings years of expertise and high-quality customer service with her. She has worked in Knoxville at other floral shops as a manager through the years and in 2004, her dream was finally realized when she opened her own floral design studio, specializing in weddings.

After making the dreams come true for over 128 brides in 2008 alone, she decided that her home studio wasn't cutting it anymore - she'd outdone herself, and outgrown her space. In 2009, the grand opening of Lisa Foster Floral Design at 6622 Kingston Pike in Knoxville became another reality in Lisa's growing business! We hit the ground running that day, and haven't stopped since. Lisa is set to surpass those 128 weddings this year, and we hope that we'll set a new record for customer delivery too. Capturing the Day

Soon, we'll start highlighting many of the weddings we've done, showcasing Lisa and the Team's hard work that makes every bride's dream a reality. But along with flowers comes many other things in making a wedding day memorable, one of those being a superbly shot, emotion-capturing video.

Ryan Sutton, of Ryan's Production, has proven a great way to preserve the day and all the unforgettable moments in it with his videography. Really...I mean a great way. A group of ladies in the studio today were either tearing up or wiping away chill bumps after his video preview of the recent wedding of Brad and Amber that Ryan, One Enchanted Evening (Wedding & Event Planning with an an office in another branch of our studio on Kingston Pike), the storybook site of Dara's Garden, and Lisa Foster all participated in.

Amber Churnetski came to Lisa Foster Floral Design for her September 5th wedding; her day was filled with pink and white roses and hydrangea's, kissing balls, and gallons of petals highlighting the aisle, all topped off with unique, breath-taking crystal trees and spotlights at the reception.

We think Ryan did a great job of capturing our work at the wedding. Take a look!

Flower of the Month: Spotlight on LISIANTHUS

Okay flower lovers, here's your chance to learn more about one of the most versatile and long lasting flowers out there. The Lisianthus, pronounced lis-ee-AN-thus, is most commonly known as "Prairie Gentian" and "Texas Bluebell". It's a favorite of florists and consumers based on its versatility and length of life.

The blooms of a Lisianthus have showy, cup-shaped, tulip-like flowers. Sometimes, due to their double-flowered varieties, they are mistaken for garden roses. The stems are anywhere from 12 to 24 inches long with gray-green leaves. There are flower buds at several intervals up the stem.

Colors of a Lisianthus range from pastel pink, to yellow, lavender, salmon or coral, all the way to deep purples, white, green, and even red hues.

Lisianthuses are available year-round, but most prevalent from June to December. So you still have time if you'd like one, or many, in an arrangement from Lisa Foster Design!

Okay, so you have your facts, and you've decided to get the flower for you, or be absolutely thoughtful and give a special someone a boutique or an arrangement with a Lisianthus as a highlight...How long can you expect it to last?? Anywhere from 7 to 14 days. Blooms last about a week and larger buds on the stems should open within that time. Make sure you cut the stems and replace flowers in a clean container for the best results.

So there is it! Our first Flower of the Month; a new feature we're incorporating here on the blog. We want you to get the most bang for your buck and the most enjoyment out of whichever flower you choose for yourself or the special person receiving the colorful gift.

We're so excited to be up and blogging over here at Lisa Foster Floral Design! We've recently moved locations, and are now at 6622 Kingston Pike, in the shopping center with Bonefish Grill and beside Wedding Wonderland. Our studio is reminiscent of Lisa's European flair with designs...and it smells great to boot (or so says almost everyone that stops by!), so come in for a visit. Stroll around, place an order for your best friend, mother, or spouse. Make an appointment with Lisa and begin planning for your dream wedding...and the beautiful colors and scents that flowers will add to the memorable day. Honor a loved one's memory with a beautiful casket spray or urn for the funeral. We're a full-service florist here, so bring us any order and we'll work with any budget.
